The beach is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and operated by the National Park Service. Because of its strong waves, the beach is popular with surfers. This is also a good spot for camping and bonfire parties.

  • Take a four-mile walk along this sandy stretch of shoreline—San Francisco's longest beach. There's also a paved path nearby that's popular with skaters. This is a good beach for wading, but because large waves crash on shore, not for young waders.
  • Ocean Beach is popular with surfers, but it's definitely not for beginners. If you're a strong surfer who can handle rip currents and icy waters and you plan on tackling the waves here, bring a wetsuit. The beach is also becoming popular with surf kayakers; it's the reported hangout of a former world surf kayak champ.
  • No alcohol or glass containers are allowed on the beach. Restrooms and outdoor showers are nearby.
