Come to Crissy Field, an urban bayside park and a favorite place to launch for intermediate and expert windsurfers. Don't get too caught up in the scenery of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge; extremely strong currents and off-shore winds are a constant danger. Watch out for sailboats, cargo tankers, and an occasional aircraft carrier.

  • San Francisco East Beach is located along the north edge of Crissy Field in the Presidio. Newly restored tidal marshes and dunes are home to water birds.
  • Crissy Field is a world-class boardsailing/windsurfing site, but sailing here is not for beginners. There's chop in the first part of the bay and strong currents, to say nothing of tanker and large-boat traffic.
  • The best time to windsurf is June through September; wet suits are always necessary.
