Fisherman's Wharf dates back to the Gold Rush, when Italian fishermen settled in and fished for the succulent Dungeness crab plentifully located in the bordering waters. Today, it teems with sites of interest, including Pier 39, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, The Cannery shopping center, Ghirardelli Square, Forbes Island restaurant, Hyde Street Pier, and the decommissioned World War II-era submarine the USS Pampanito. More than anything, Fisherman's Wharf is a great place to catch the sights and sounds of San Francisco. During the day street performers line the promenade, while at night there's live music, theater, dancing, comedy clubs, and more. A food lover's haven, Fisherman's Wharf boasts some of the best dining in the city. Visitors can salivate over fresh Dungeness crab at outdoor stands or in the many seafood restaurants, smell fresh sourdough bread baking, and savor locally made chocolate. The eclectic mix of international cuisine is also sure to tempt taste buds.
