Founded in 1935, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. And today it continues that tradition, exhibiting and collecting works by both modern masters and less-established artists. Audio guides, docent tours, videos, interactive kiosks, and public programs offer visitors several learning opportunities. SFMOMA's landmark building, just a short walk from downtown, displays a soaring atrium topped by a turret and oculus skylight. The Museum Store features modern and contemporary art books, design objects, furniture, jewelry, and children's products. The light-filled cafe serves gourmet fare. The museum is open daily (except for Wednesday) from 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., and is open late on Thursdays, until 8:45 p.m.

  • Designed by Mario Botta and completed in 1995, SFMOMA has a lot to offer the art enthusiast and the curious. The permanent collection includes works by Richard Diebenkorn, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Frieda Kahlo and more.
  • SFMOMA was one of the first institutions to recognize photography as a legitimate art form, and in 1935 began collecting and exhibiting photographs. The collection includes William Eggleston, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Eugène Atget, Dorothea Lange, and Helen Levitt among others.
  • The museum is open every day except Wednesday, and is free on the first Tuesday of the month. On Thursday evenings admission is half-price.
