Henry James’ gayest novel, The Bostonians (well, technically, they’re lesbians—lesbian relationships actually used to be called “Boston marriages”) is set in and around the tony areas of Back Bay and Beacon Hill, including the oldest park in America, Boston Common. Henry would have recognized the Swan Boats, a Victorian invention that still lures travelers in the Public Garden at the north side of the Common. The giant gliding boats shaped like big swans have a fabulous queeny quality which you can add on to a day of strolling through the gay South End area or the boutiques of Beacon Hill. The Swans start sailing in April and float till fall.
