About 40 miles of interconnecting trails in the foothills let you put together many different loops. Ask for a trail brochure at the visitor center or print one out from the website. You can reach the trails from the north side of the Cactus Forest Drive or trailheads near the east ends of Broadway and Speedway Boulevards. At wet times, Bridal Wreath Falls is a pretty sight, a 5.2-mile round-trip to the southeast from the Douglas Spring Trailhead. The Garwood Loop also begins at the Douglas Spring Trailhead and swings south to the old Garwood Ranch. Mountain bikers may ride only the 2.5-mile one-way Cactus Forest Trail inside the loop drive; a lime kiln historic site is one of the attractions on the way.

  • Carry and drink at least one gallon of water if you are out for the day; snacks and sport drinks are also good.
  • Most of the Cactus Forest area has gentle terrain. For more rugged and scenic countryside, head to the area east of Garwood Trail.
  • These trails are day-use only, but with a backcountry permit you can continue east on the Douglas Spring Trail into the Saguaro Wilderness and its campgrounds.
