- In the 1930s, Marshal South decided to live off the land at Ghost Mountain in Anza-Borrego Desert. This trail visits the remains of the homestead built by South and his wife, where they lived with their children for more than 15 years. The family tried to survive and thrive in the spartan style of early Native Americans, but eventually South's wife grew weary of the desert's many hardships.
- The trail climbs through a series of switchbacks to the South home site, where all that remains are a few partial walls, an old mattress frame, and assorted cisterns and barrels used for storing precious water.
- Blair Valley and Ghost Mountain are higher in elevation than other parts of the park, so the temperature is often cooler here than at points closer to Borrego Springs.
