On a hill high above the city, the Halifax Citadel is a star-shaped fort with lots of tunnels and ramparts to explore. Families should aim to see the cannon go off, at noon daily. If your young ones can sit through an hourlong film, Tides of History starts every 15 minutes in four mini-theaters and is an enlightening presentation of the people, places, and events that shaped Halifax. Guided tours, 45 minutes long, provide a show-and-tell of the grounds and a half-dozen exhibits, including the Soldiers' Barracks and the Guard Room. Actors portray people in Victorian-era Halifax, with Highland soldiers performing bayonet exercises while their wives scrub laundry and bagpipers play traditional tunes.
