Just a quick, five-minute drive from downtown, Montrose is the hub of Houston's thriving gay and lesbian community. Although East and West Coasters may not believe it, Houston's out gay life began just after Stonewall in this community, and it's been thriving ever since. The city's Gay Pride Parade is one of the oldest in the country. Although Montrose was born as a bohemian enclave like the East and West Villages of New York City, now you'll find some of the chicest boutiques and restaurants of Houston nestled here, as well as some of the most expensive newly gentrified real estate. Take an afternoon to walk Montrose's charming streets of bungalows with wide porches and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards, and stop in an outdoor café to take in the street life. It feels like a very upscale suburb, set just outside the city. In Houston, all gay roads lead to Montrose.
