Houston is not only home to big oil, it’s also home to some of the greatest art collections in the world. One of the most prestigious and modern is the Menil Collection, which houses the famous Rothko Chapel. The chapel was designed by Howard Barnstone based on an earlier design by the gay Philip Johnson and houses fourteen Mark Rothko paintings. Its Zen-like simplicity and calm are an oasis of tranquility in the city. The grounds around the museum are also quite beautiful. Other collections inside worth spending hours over are the museum’s first class Surrealist exhibition.
