On a clear day, there is no experience quite as pleasant as a stroll through Market Square. The historic district has been a Houston hot spot ever since the Allen brothers—two northern real estate promoters—founded the city in 1836.

Just beyond the square's 19th century architecture, sculpture, and brightly painted benches are Travis and Main Streets, which host a slew of restaurants, night clubs, and shops. You'll find neighborhood gems like Warren's Inn, a rustic tavern clad with wood paneling that serves up more-than affordable grub, drinks, and solid music. Look for the mint exterior and neon lights.
