Pearl is Portland's famous art district, and though its beginnings were humble, a complete urban renewal has transformed the area from somewhat shabby to positively chic. Striking a balance between city and suburb, the District's charming historic buildings, trendy lofts, open parks, and mesmerizing theaters have topped countless must-see and must-do lists for those visiting Portland.

More than 130 artists and performers fill the blocks of Northwest Park with sculpture, paintings, photos, and jewelry for Art in the Pearl, held every Labor Day weekend. And three times a week, farmers, dairies, and bakers sell their bounty at Portland Farmers Market—ranked one of the best in the country.
