Locals and travelers alike love the laid back atmosphere in this tried and true gay bar. Every night of the week you'll find sing-alongs, and on the weekend drag shows feature trannie Tina Turners and Queen Beatrixes (the Queen of Holland and a particular favorite diva at the Amstel). On weekends, the crowd here spills out on the street which fronts the Amstel River. Newly renovated but still its well-loved old self, this is a great place to go to get your bearings in gay Amsterdam in a gently cruisy and non-threatening atmosphere. Amstel skews on the older side, so if you're in the mood for a Dutch daddy, it's a good choice!
