Most travelers to Amsterdam make a pilgrimage to the Anne Frank House, the home where the famed victim of Nazi Germany lived and hid from the Nazis in the famous attic room. In September of 1987, Holland's gay community won a long, hard battle to unveil the "Homomonument", a huge, pink granite triangle designed by Karin Daan, that commemorated the millions of gay men and women murdered by Hitler and the Nazi regime. The giant pink triangle points to three places: the National War Memorial, the COC (the Center for Culture and Leisure, the oldest gay community house in the world), and the Anne Frank House. It took eight years to raise the necessary 180,000 euros to build the Homomonument, and most of this came from donations from individuals and gay organizations. It's the gay answer to the Vietnam War Memorial, and just as moving. The monument also commemorates the courage of gay men and women in the face of persecution today and also the millions of gay victims of AIDS; a must-see for gay travelers to the city.
