That's a long ride from San Diego to the Grand Canyon. If you do want to tour the Grand Canyon, then you'll probably want to get somewhere closer such as Flagstaff, Phoenix, or Las Vegas, from where you can organize day or overnight transportation. Lodging at the Canyon runs the gamut from basic (camping) to budget (motels, but not near the rim) to luxe (historic rim-side lodges like El Tovar). My advice? Don't go for just the day, as the best way to experience the canyon is to hike down into it. The views are great from the South Rim, sure, but they get even better as you descend on paths like the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails. If you can get to Phoenix, check out the daylong air-hike package from Westwind Air Tours ($469 per person), which is a once-in-a-lifetime way to experience the canyon from both the air and the ground!
