Typically, summer is best time of year as the animals are obviously more active and terrain is more accessible. July, for example, sees the peak of the world's largest sockeye salmon run in Katmai National Park, which in turn brings big, hungry brown bears to the river bar -- and thousands of eager bear watchers armed with cameras and binocs. Go in June to beat the crowds but still catch the bears out by the river. June through September is also a good time to see humpback and minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and Dall's porpoises out in the bays.
