Hi Lee, Medford Lakes is on the doorstep of Wharton State Forest, which offers 500 miles of trails that meander through cedar swamps, bogs, and pine heaths. The habitat here is home to wildlife including bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, owls, swans, and hummingbirds. Some ideas for activities include hiking the 50-mile Batona Trail, one of the Garden State's best-kept secrets that winds through three New Jersey state parks and plenty of boggy, piney wilderness. Wharton also includes 155 miles of streams and rivers that flow through the famous Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey; the best paddling is along the Oswego, Wading, and Batsto rivers, where you can camp overnight (permit required).
