Not a bad idea to visit Italy in winter to dodge the crowds and high prices of other seasons. Hot spots like Rome, Venice, and Florence will definitely be a little cooler this time of year, but museums, cathedrals, and the like are open year-round. You might consider a trip to Sicily with the kids, where you'll find warmer weather, beaches, ancient ruins, volcanoes, and a very unique, welcoming island culture. You can fly to Palermo from Rome or take the scenic train ride down the southwestern coast of Italy, stopping at Naples en route or on the way back. The Sicilian town of Catania hosts the big St. Agatha's Feast Day in early February, said to be the second largest religous procession in the world. Your trip might also coincide with Carnevale, celebrated 40 days before Easter, especially in Taormina and Acireale.
