My best tip for New Orleans is to stay just outside of the French Quarter (just a block or two outside the limits). Hotels are much cheaper, and they are still just as nice and convenient to everything. Most of the events you want to avoid have already passed for this year (Mardi gras, Jazz Fest), so you should be good to go. Just don't go on Halloween or any holidays. Hotel prices will be up.
