Depends on where you are, but I'd say if you are within driving/bus/train distance from DC it is a great destination for a budget trip. Your major cost will be hotel. You can lower this expense by staying outside of the district in places like Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase, MD or Arlington/FallsChurch/Vienna, VA. Stay within walking distance of a metro station and walk to the metro, buy fare cards, and zip around the city. DC has a ton of things free... museums(art, history, etc), parks (Rock Creek, National Arboretum, Georgetown Waterfront), tours (Capitol, Bureau of Engraving), the zoo, and even some concerts like the one at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage everyday at 6pm. If you are super savvy I'd recommend packing your lunch to eat on the National Mall then grab a semi-early dinner during the many Happy Hours that restaurants around the city feature (great way to try food & not pay regular price). With so many different areas in DC it is easy to feel like you've traveled many places over one trip.
If DC is not nearby and you're looking for something more low-key, pick a National Park... Pack some non-perishable food, a tent, and conjure up some good stories for the kiddos. Nothing like a trip to Yellowstone or Yosemite to see some of the most breathtaking wonders of the world.
Good luck!
