In 1931, the migratory lark bunting (Calamospiza melancorys Stejneger) became Colorado's state bird. The bird is known for its distinctive courtship practices, which include a theatrical courtship flight and mating song. In terms of the lark bunting's appearance, a breeding male is black with white wings, but in winter it becomes a gray brown color, much like the female.
