I have traveled to 45 states and been to almost every city in America, beside those cities that are in Tornado Alley...and since I currently live in D.C. I might be biased but I would say the best city to visit in the U.S. would be D.C. just because of the ease of transportation via Metro, the many free things to do like museums, tours, zoo, concerts, and parks. Whether you are a family of 5 or a lone-traveler you can find something that you love in D.C.
BUT if you are looking to experience staying in a city with the people hurrying everywhere, street vendors, cars honking, lights flashing, etc then I would say to splurge and stay in NYC. The tall buildings of The Big Apple never let you forget you are in the middle of a city and it's just a different world from any other city in America. With either of these places I would opt to take public transportation though, live like a local! Good luck!

Without more context, this question is nearly impossible to answer. Where do live, what's your budget, when are you traveling? Take a look at Away.com's extensive library of Top Ten Travel Lists for the best places to visit throughout the world, from the top cities for foodies to the best places to snorkel in the Caribbean. These should give some good ideas to get you started! http://away.com/plan-a-trip/top-tens.html
