What attractions are there between Bluefield WV and around Mavisdale VA? My family lives in WV and we are planning a trip to Mavisdale VA to visit family for the weekend of the July 4th. Is there any attractions between Bluefield and Mavisdale, or with in a hour or so from Mavisdale VA?

Honestly, there aren't a ton of "big" attractions in this neck of the woods, though this part of southwestern Virginia obviously drops you in the heart of Appalachia and some great outdoorsy adventures. For starters, try 4,500-acre Breaks Interstate Park, about 30 miles from Mavisdale and straddling the Virginia-Kentucky line. This is rugged mountain territory with good hiking, fishing, and swimming, among other activities. Another fun-filled option is canoeing and rafting on the Russell Fork River, which cuts through Breaks Interstate Park. This river is free-flowing except for four weekends in October when scheduled releases from the Flanagan Dam herald the best of the whitewater madness (expert rafters only). Water levels at other times of the year are dependent on rainfall, though are also less intimidating, too. Contact Kentucky Whitewater for trips and kayak/ducky rentals (www.kentuckywhitewater.com); they are based in Elkhorn City, KY, less than 40 miles from Mavisdale.
