October is my favorite season on the Cape and Islands. The weather is crisp but the water is still (barely) warm enough for swimming. There are a bunch of harvest festivals around the Cape, so check wherever you're staying locally. Also, it's the tail end of whale watching season. Barnstable and Hyannis both have great whale watching tours.

October is the perfect time for strolls on the beach, bike rides, and nature walks. And yes, it is the last month of the whale watching season.

Just a small correction to Pieter's post: Whale watches leave from Barnstable Harbor in the mid-Cape region and Provincetown Harbor at the far northern tip of the Cape. There are no whale watch cruises from Hyannis. (The company named "Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises" sails from Barnstable Harbor on Cape Cod Bay.)

October is also a great time to watch our local cranberry crops being harvested. It's fascinating to see the cranberry farmers scooping the ruby red berries from the flooded bogs!
