By "peaceful" we'll assume you want to avoid the major cities and tourist hubs, right? If so, why not orient your trip north to south to enjoy the best of the seasons as you go (again, we're making the assumption you're wanting to do a road trip here). Start things out in Montreal, Canada's chill Old World "ville," then thread your way over the border into Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire in time for the spectacular fall foliage (some highlights: Green Mountain National Forest and Missisquoi Valley, both vermont, and the Carrabassett Valley, Maine; more ideas here: http://away.com/travel-interests/fall-foliage-guide/index.html). Next, follow the changing season south through New York's Hudson Valley and into the more densely populated Mid-Atlantic region. Obviously, there are lots of big cities to check out if you want to (NYC, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C.) or you can keep things mellow by exploring Pennsylvania's bucolic Dutch County roads. From there, hit the I-95 highway to the Carolinas and the coast, or swing inland for a time to hit the West Virginia highlands or Shenandoah Valley area. Before passing big southern coastal resorts like Myrtle Beach, you might also consider cutting over to North Carolina's Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras (http://vacation.away.com/north-carolina/travel-v2-cid362308-outer+banks-cid350266-active+and+adventure-vacations.html). Both South and North Carolina offer lots of interesting, laid-back barrier islands and coastal communities, some highlights being Edisto Island and Hilton Head. Georgia, too, has some nice places to stop, including Savannah, St. Simons, and Jeykll Island. And last, but not least, you've got the bright, white sands of Florida, stretching from Jacksonville and Amelia Island in the north to Miami and the Keys in the south. Time your trip to swing through these beach-centric southern states in November and December
