We will be in Asheville 10/8-10/12. Will the fall colors be showing? I'm getting a little worried that we won't see much.

Colors in western North Carolina are beautiful between the second weekend in October and the second weekend in November. Colors begin at the highest elevations, gradually moving towards the lower foothills and valley regions. In my area, thirty minutes east of Asheville, including Old Fort, Marion, Lake James, Little Switzerland and Linville Falls, elevations range between 1200 to 3000 feet. You could literally drive the Blue Ridge Parkway between Little Switzerland and Linville Falls experiencing beautiful oranges, reds and yellows then drive the DiamondbackNC (tm) to Marion where foliage is still green! Mt. Mitchell, just south along the Parkway from Little Switzerland, is another story altogether with temperatures 10-15 degrees cooler and colors changing earlier! Come back in October 2010!

I was there a week ago, 10/1-3/09, and the colors had already started showing in the higher altitudes of the blue ridge parkway.

I think you'll be a tad early, plus all the recent wet weather hasn't really helped your chances of a great show (though a cold front in the past few days may be tipping the scales back in your favor somewhat!). Head to the higher elevations on the Blue Ridge Parkway to catch the earlier turning shades. Still, it'll be a beautiful spot to visit; get out for a hike on the Tanawha Trail off the Parkway or up Mount Cammerer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Check out the weekly reports from NC Tourism for the latest color reports from around the state: http://www.visitnc.com/journeys/articles/fall-color-l-fall-fishing/1/weekly-fall-color-reports
