We live in Toronto and I would like to take my family for a week's vacation in Cape Cod this September. My wife and I have a 4 year old boy who loves all things related to the ocean (whales, sharks, rays, coral etc.) so I thought the Cape might be a good idea. Any recommendations are welcome. Ideally, on the ocean with reasonable driving access to sites and activities.

Hi I have lived in Cape Cod for the past 10 plus years. Woods Hole has a free aquarium that kids can enjoy and touch tanks along with a seal outside, parking is challenging but well worth it. If you are traveling to Cape Cod make a stop at the Boston Aquarium it is an actual boat please allow at least 3 to 4 hours. Whale watching trip start in Plymouth just off cape and run to Provincetown. Very fun however a very long boat ride for a little one. Consider instead the pirate adventure ride in Provincetown. Enjoy your stay. Don't forget your bikes as Cape Cod has a fab bike trail.

Hi EcoDad, I took my family to the Cape a few years back and we stayed at the Anchorage on the Cove Inn near Eastham, about halfway up the Cape. Nice spot, within easy access to Cape Cod National Seashores beaches plus the more family-friendly bayside stretch at Skaket Beach. Anchorage on the Cove has some nice shingle-roofed cottages that front Nauset Bay, from where you can light out in a kayak or canoe to explore the marshes and try your luck at fishing. There are whale-watching tours out of Provincetown, though I'm not sure how much fun this'll be for a four-year-old as it's quite a long time on a boat to see not all that much (these guys don't really go in for any Shamu acrobatics).
