We are planning a California vacation in January. We would like to drive from the LA area to San Francisco and would like to know the best scenic route to take, how many miles and how long to drive it with a few stop along the way, especially in Montery?

It's a spectacular drive, but gets very long and windy. You can also take 101 part of the time, it doesn't always have the ocean views, but follows the old el camino real, and lots of farms, valleys, missions.
Look into Santa Barbara, st Luis obispo, solvang and Santa Cruz as other places to stop. We do this drive every year and stay at the Madonna inn, but it's definitely not for everyone! I've always wanted to say at Treebones (upscalee yurts)or one of the spendy hotels near Big Sur. There's a beautiful ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay (hour south of SF) and some glam camping a bit farther south, near ano Nuevo, where the elephant seals are.
Bon voyage!

California Highway 1 -- better known as the Pacific Coast Highway -- is the best drive to take. Considered to be one of the most scenic drives in America.
