We are from east coast, want to fly into Seattle, rent a camper or car and travel down coast to San Francisco. Return home from there. Is there an easy way to plan and decide which is the best way to go? Car would involve hotel/motels expense but camp grounds could be costly also. Any advice or ideas?

Yes, do this trip. The Oregon coast is incredible and has a lot of campgrounds near the beach that cost $12-$15 (http://www.oregonstateparks.org/searchpark.php). When I did this five years ago, you could camp on the beach for free, which we did, but it was so windy we woke up and our tent was upside-down and buried in two feet of sand...so maybe the $12 is worth it. In northern California, the campgrounds at Redwoods National Park (http://www.nps.gov/redw/) are great and not too too busy.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

Funny that, my family had planned to do this trip back in the '80s, but my dad's travel agent botched the camper booking so we had to scramble and rent a station wagon for the trip (there are six in my family). Great fun, but I remember it involved lots of driving and fighting over the window seats). I'd recommend the RV route, which will be expensive upfront and involve relatively high gas costs, but then you're masters of your own itinerary and can really get away from the more touristy towns and byways. Sure, campgrounds will cost each night, but nothing on the order of what it'll cost to stay at hotels and motels every night. My final personal anecdote from our ill-fated family road trip all those years ago? Avoid Yakima, which is where my dad witnessed a shooting as he was out foraging for food while we were back in our motel (granted, it was a one-off and the place has probably changed since then!!).
