The best places is to get off exit 407 I belive at Pegion Forge and cruse through Parkway into Gatlinburg. You will love Gatlinburg it is so cute I fall in love with everytime I go great for couples and family lots to do and see really could place to relax and enjoy ur self. We go 2 or three times a year now for the past 3 yrs. Mormial Day,July 4th and Labor Day. Its only a 5 hour drive from me after we go through Gatlinburg it takes u stright into the great smoky mtns national park and we down back into cherkoee nc. So its perfect we live in nc so its a circle for us. but since u are headed to the memphis u might want to go backwards by starting in cherokee in go throught the national park then Gatlinburg then Pegion Forge back onto 40 and to Memphis. You will not regret it at all the whole family will love it and just the drive through the park is worth it we see wild deer blk bears etc...Good Luck and be Safe......

You'll definitely want to spend some time in Asheville, NC. Check out the Biltmore Estate while you're there, and eat in one of the funky downtown spots. If you make a detour off of I-40 onto west 19, you'll go through Bryson City and then can continue on to the Nantahala River, fun to see even if rafting isn't on your agenda. Backtrack east just a bit to 441, the best road through the park. You'll see Clingman's Dome, the highest point in the park, plus many other sites. I would take a whole day for the drive through the park and really enjoy it. Gatlinburg is just outside the park's north end, if you enjoy a little bit of Appalachian kitsch. From there, you have options heading north, east, and west that will all take you back to I-40.
