Want to photograph the Northern Lights. Best place & best month?

I love photography and it's my dream to see & photograph the Northern Lights. I am willing to rough it out and bear the cold since I live in Mumbai, India. Please suggest the best place and best month for an assured sighting. Thanks a lot.

Shivy, obviously you need to head to the far north to catch the northern lights. Some areas to consider include Alaska and Canada's Yukon and Northwest Territories (places like Whitehorse offers lots of tours, from a night to several nights). Scandinavia is another good spot, including Finland's Lapland and northern Norway. You could also try Iceland. As it so happens, the solar cycle that affects the magnitude of the aurora borealis is peaking this year, which means the northern lights will be visible 200 nights in 2013. Winter's best as the nights are longer and offer prime viewing conditions. If you can, check out Finland's Laplication app on iTunes!
