traveling to Leon for a family wedding end of July 4 adults and 3 teen boys. Looking to travel perhaps the Basque coast for 10 days beginning of August. Would it be best to rent a car to self guide through villages. We are really only interested in beaches (north coast only) wineries, and maybe a really cool castle to visit?

I contacted a friend who studied in Bilbao for about six months. He recommends hiring a car as "public transport is not that reliable." He agrees that coastline is breathtaking, including some good surf spots (although, he notes, "the weather can be a bit Scottish'). You might try look into camping, although it can get crowded over the summer holiday season so book early. You could do a really nice circuit by driving the coastline between Blibao, Santander, anf Gijon/Oviedo before heading down toward Leon. There's a nice castle, Castillo de Munatones, at Muskiz between Bilbao and Santander. You might also consider a visit to Picos de Europa National Park (literally, "Peaks of Europe National Park"), a swath of protected mountains that rise to over 7,000 feet and which are home to bears, wolves, and numerous other wildlife. Might offer a nice counterpoint to all those beaches!
