Depends on how much you want to spend. The Inn of Chicago is steps away from Michigan Avenue (One Mag Mile), the main shopping area and Water Tower Place, seven floors of shopping. There's also The Whitehall, The Talbott small European style, very conveniently located. And safe. No, the train station is not close to shopping, you'll want to take a taxi, which should be lined up outside the station. Check online under Chicago festivals and art shows, tons of them and they're free and a lot of fun all over downtown. Go on the Wendella Boat tour, which goes down the Chicago River and then out to Lake Michigan, at night the skyline is breathtaking as well as Buckingham Fountain all lit up and in full operation, breathtaking! Have fun! Chicago is a blast!
