Wow, that's a big, open-ended question with 1,001 possible answers. Gunflint Lodge will definitely be a pretty special place to visit in November, though do bear in mind that it'll be pretty cold as fall gives way to winter. If you don't mind chillier temps, maybe catch the big winter migration of the elk herd in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park (though perhaps not so much fun for your five-year-old, I suspect). Heading further south where things are warmer, maybe try Palm Springs, California, with a great mix of outdoor activities as well as pools, not to mention a good range of accommodation choices. (You're also within striking distance of LA/Anaheim, if the urge strikes.) Likewise, you might consider Sedona, Arizona (http://vacation.away.com/arizona/travel-v2-cid4164-sedona-cid350262-family-vacations.html), another good warm-weather winter locale.
