Planning to visit Rome mid April for a few days then going to Florence. What is the least expensive way to go? Bus? If so, which one. Is train faster? Air?

I totally agree with taking the train. What a great way to travel Italy. When I was stationed in Gaeta I would take the train to Rome just about every weekend. Gaeta would be a great place to visit if you have the time!

Try one of the slower trains. Travel time is around two to four hours, but they are less expensive than the fast train.

Take the train. It's an inexpensive and convenient way to travel. Rail travel in Europe is much more comfortable and efficient than what you find in the U.S.
