Planning a Fall Girls Trip with my 65 year old mother. We have about 3 to 4 days to spare. We would prefer something fun and historical. Granted we have always resided in Texas. There seems to be an abundance of festivals this time of year. There is only so much shopping my mother can handle. Any ideas??

This is a bit of a long shot, Ginger, but do you and your mother like birds? Fall is the season to catch the migration of songbirds, waterfowl, and other species as they head to warmer wintering grounds in the south in places like coastal Texas. The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trails offer a number of good driving itineraries where you can explore the natural wonders of the area. Check out Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, south of San Antonio and Austin, where the critically endangered whooping crane can be spotted from late October after migrating south from its northerly nesting grounds. Lots of other wildlife to spot here, too, including herons, alligators, pelicans, frogs, and some 390 species of other birds!
