Try Le Square Phillips. It is a short taxi ride from the train station. It is located in the center of Montreal, therefore it is in walking distance of everything. I don't know what the current rate is, but in 2007 we stayed there for 10 days. At that time there was a drugstore and a supermarket around the corner. Across the street was a bank where we exchanged our currency. Up the block was the subway, department store and tons of shopping and restaurants located near the platform of the unground subway. I agree that the Notre-Dame Bascilla is a must see, but I also loved visiting and dining in Chinatown. Enjoy, it is a great city.

I love Montreal! It's a great city and has so many different things to do. I would recommend Hotel Nelligan. It is right in Old Montreal, walking distance to most of the tourist sites in the city. Cirque du Soleil originates from here, I highly recommend checking out a show. Also, there are a lot of markets all over the city. They're a lot of fun to go cruise around. Jean-Talon is one of the biggest and best. If you like to dine, I would make it a point to visit some of the best restaurants in the city. Food is an important part of the city and a different vibe than what you'll find in the States. Every restaurant is small and intimate. Of course Notre-Dame Basilica is a must-see. A Mont Royal park is quite popular. And lastly, you should buy at least one Montreal-style bagel. Try Fairmount Bagel or St-Viateur’s Bagel.
