My husband and I are wanting to go on a 25th anniversary vacation and friends told us that the Mackinack Island area is very beautiful and romantic. We are very interested in going, however, we only want to spend apx. 1/2 of our week there and we have no idea what else there is to do in that general location. We would love to spend the rest of the time enjoying beautiful scenery; maybe skiing, which we have never experienced, or just enjoying nature on the Great Lakes. I keep running into dead-ends. I plan to go to a travel agency soon, but I need something to give them as far as ideas. I noticed there are national parks above the Mackinaw area but thats all I know. Please help us plan an unordinary, beautiful, romantic 25th anniversary vacation.

I would look into Petosky, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. They are about a half hour from Mackinac. They are touristy and fun places. Mackinac is beautiful but I would say 2 days is a good amount of time there. If you golf there are many places in that area. Also Traverse City which is about 2 hours from Mackinac has wine country.

The michigan.org site is a great resource to find places to go in MI

Mackinac is definitely a classy, old-school place for a romantic escape. The pick of accommodations on the island is obviously the Victorian-era Grand Hotel. I'm assuming you'll be up there in winter (cold!). If so, you might try the skiing at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa, south of Traverse City (other fun winter activities to look out for in the area: ice-fishing, snowshoeing, corss-country skiing, and dogsledding). From there, drive up toward Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for some great views. Head back toward Traverse City and hug the lakeshore on US-31 for more pretty lakeside views, continuing past Harbor Springs to Wilderness State Park, St. Ignace, and the ferry to the "Mac." Hope this helps!
