My husband and I are planning trip to San Antonio, TX, in March of 2011. Where can we enjoy a scenic view of the Rio Grand River? Where can we cross over into Mexico for a little shopping/cultural visit? Both mini-trips would need to be day trips from San Antonio, AND would need to be safe from crime. Thank you.

You might try the Lake Amistad area, which offers 850 miles of shoreline, fishing, and even scuba and snorkeling. It's about 160 miles west of San Antonio, so within range of a longish day trip. The Rio Grande flows out of the lake on its way southeast along the U.S.-Mexico line. Nearby, there's a couple of border crossings to Ciudad Acuna without perhaps some of the grittier stuff in Nuevo Laredo or Piedras Negras. More info on Amistad at: http://bit.ly/fKQ2II
