My husband and I are moving to New Mexico from Atlantic Canada and are planning a road trip to our new home. We want to cover the highlites of the eastern seaboard starting in Maine and ending in Georgia. Then we need to cross Oklahoma or Texas so that we can be in New Mexico by the end of November. We have 3 weeks to do this trip but we are wondering what others recommend as a amazing sites. We also have a small 6 pound dog that we are travelling with so we need pet friendly hotels/motels that have safe secure parking as our vehicle is pretty full due to the move. Any help planning this would be apprciated.

Cool trip (and good luck with the move). A few years back, Away.com published some excerpts from Jamie Jensen's "Road Trip USA," which included a leg tracing the Appalachian Trail between Maine and Georgia and which sounds perfect for you guys. Also offers lots of pet-friendly hikes and outdoor spaces in places like Shenandoah National Park and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. From there, Jamie plots a route between Savannah and San Diego which will take you right through New Mexico. I'd recommend you pick up a copy of the guide before you leave. You can read excerpts here, including descriptions of the two routes I mentioned: http://away.com/itinerary/united-states/road-trip-usa-1.html
