My friends and I are traveling to Cozumel in April and we would like to visit Chichen Itza on our own. Is it safe to rent a car and drive there? What are the roads like? We would prefer to drive thru the towns and not take the toll roads. Thanks Christina

Chichen Itza is on the mainland. There are excursions that you can sign up at your hotel's travel desk. If you have a car rental, you would have to take the car ferry to the mainland (and back). The roads are safe in that part of Mexico. You may be stopped to have your papers checked. There are not a lot of roads, just the main road that runs from Playa del Carmen to Cancun. Then you would have to drive from Cancun to chichen Itza. There are excursions by bus and by air. Most of the Yucatan is jungle, not a lot of towns.
