My boyfriend and I are going to Mexico for new year and trying to decide where to go. We are flying into Cancun and are considering Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. Ideally we want somewhere that isn't ridiculously touristy but has the option of a bit of nightlife if we want it. Would Puerto Morelos fit this? I get the impression there aren't many bars but just a few would do! We aren't looking for a completely 'get away from it all' location but somewhere in between. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you are looking for a relaxing vacation...I vote Puerto Morelos. I have been all over Mexico, and was in Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres last year. Playa has hotels that are away from town, on beautiful big beaches. However, the downtown area is a huge, crowded place. I honestly think it is bigger than Cancun! Tons of bars, but all very loud and expensive. I have always found that going out to a bar is hard to do after a full day in the sun, and I would rather stay at my hotel and drink by the pool or on the beach. The all inclusive deals from Expedia are the best way I have found to travel to mexico. They all have bars with great drinks right at your hotel - no need to bother with taxi's and covercharges. Not really any night life in Morelos other than eating out - Playa del Carmen may suit you better. Not as big as Cancun. Or try Cozumel. Awesome snorkeling everywhere in the area. You'd have to taxi to night life from PM
