Here is some advice from Away.com's Mexico beach-travel expert, Gary Chandler (http://vacation.away.com/expert/travel-eb-travel-expert-expid7-gary+chandler.html): "Tulum is a very safe area, despite the rise in crime elsewhere in the Mexico. Tourists should take the normal precautions, like not leaving valuables in plain sight or walking to/from your hotel very late at night, but crime isn't a reason to cancel a trip there. And it may be obvious, but travelers should stay away from anyone or anyplace having to do with drugs or gangs. Virtually all the recent violence is related to those worlds, and Mexican police and military are cracking down even on casual users, with increased roadblocks and searches."
