I've been wanting to drive across the United States for years. Can you recommend a route to take starting near DC, where to stop and what to see on the way? Can I easily do it in less than three weeks, and what should I pack? Do I book hotels or sleep in my car? Is it safe? Bless you if you can answer those. Google is useless on this topic.

What, Google isn't all-knowing??? Glad to step in when the Great G can't provide! We have just the route for you. It's called the Loneliest Road and stretches across the middrift of the country from Maryland's Eastern Shore to San Fran, crossing some of the most historic and scenic parts of the country including Kentucky, Colorado, Utah, and, of course, California. We have a short excerpt on Away.com to give you a taster, but I'd recommend you buy a copy of Jamie Jensen's excellent "Road Trip USA" guide for full details. Mileage is 3,200 miles end to end, so you'll definitely need three weeks or more. As for safety, yes it's safe but take the necessary precautions; I'd recommend against sleeping in your car. If you're a camper, you'll find some great budget options along the way. http://away.com/itinerary/united-states/road-trip-usa-10.html
