One more for you! Conservation Volunteers' "Pelican Lagoon (Kangaroo Island)" tour is a five-day program to help researchers build and maintain facilities and monitor wild echidnas, goannas, or penguins on the island.

There are a number of wildlife sanctuaries on Kangaroo Island where you can volunteer to help with conservation efforts, usually as part of an organized tour. The EarthWatch Institute offers an "Echidnas & Goannas of Kangaroo Island" tour, part of its Scientist for a Day program, though I couldn't find dates for 2010. Real Gap Experience has two- to six-week volunteer programs on Kangaroo Island, too.
