If you're a U.S. citizen, you do not currently require a passport to cross the U.S.-Canadian border, but you do need to show some form of government-issued ID (ie, driver's license) and a birth certificate or naturalization certificate. However, this will all change in June 2009 when all U.S. and Canadian citizens who are 16 and over will need to show a passport (http://help.cbp.gov/cgi-bin/customs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=74&p_created=1043364936&p_sid=CG-cH_nj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD02NDcsNjQ3JnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1). Safest bet? Take your passport.
