In looking at hotels in Jax, what areas are safe?

My family will be in Jax and we are looking at hotels but don't know the areas that are safe versus those we should stay away from.

I checked with a colleague who's from Florida, who knows Jacksonville relatively well plus has friends in the area. He says the areas around the Univ. of North Florida are among the safest in Jax, plus you should look around Tinseltown/Town Center. Also, Riverside, San Marco, and the beaches (Jax, Neptune and Atlantic Beaches) are generally quite safe, with some exceptions from block to block. Ponte Vedra, St. Johns, Clay County are good areas, too, he says. As for places to avoid, steer clear of the northwest quadrant, plus Northside inner city or Westside inner city. Downtown (around the Jacksonville Landings, for example) is considered quite safe in the daytime, but my friend recommends you not go walking around alone at night here. Hope this helps!
