I'm visiting my boyfriend in Doha, Qatar and I've heard bizarre stories that we can't stay the night together or be seen in public because we are not married? Is that true?

Qatar is governed by Islamic law so, yes, it is illegal for unmarried couples to live together. However, this mostly pertains to Qatari citizens, though non-Qataris should certainly be very sensitive to the cultural norms of this conservative Middle Eastern state. There are stories about certain hotels not accepting unmarried couples, but as your boyfriend is already living in the country I think you'll be OK on that front. I'm guessing that if you're discrete and don't draw attention to yourselves with raucous parties or attire, it shouldn't be a problem. If in doubt check with the foreign office of your home country.
