Yellowstone is more gorgeous & green this year than in a long time! Mid-September should be awesome for elk; Check out travelyellowstone.com for great info, & consider staying at Mammoth Hot Springs for a day or two of your visit. The cabins are rustic fun, & the elk love that area, especially in the early morning & toward dusk. The Old Faithful area is a great place to watch elk & buffalo & see many of the famed thermal features of the park. Take a free guided tour of the Old Faithful Inn, the "Old House", as it's known, for a great history lesson in "parkitechure" & the 1988 Fires. The Lamar Valley, west from MHS toward the Northeast (Cooke City, MT) Entrance, is an awesome place to view many big mammals, including grizzlies, wolves, bison, elk, deer. Strong binoculars are great for viewing incredible sights up to a mile away. (Rent a spotting scope from the park.) Bring your best telephoto lens & warm, water-repellant clothing.
