I'm planning a trip to Cancun area in Mid-August, with my family kids from 21yr down to 11. I have several questions: 1) There are so many resorts and places to stay, is there an area that is better for families? What are the +/- of different areas. 2) How do I ensure that I get accommodations RIGHT ON the beach with a great ocean view? I don't want to walk through a complex, etc. 3) I want to snorkel/scuba (never been), so is there an area that is best for that? I hear about ripoffs, how do I ensure that I am hooking up with a reputable and good outfit for that activity? Any recommendations? 4) I want to see some of the many ruins in the area. Should I rent a car? I've driven all over Europe with no problems, but I'm not familiar with Cancun. 5) Given the time of year, should I get travel insurance? or is there some other way of trying to "insure" my trip from Hurricanes, etc.? Any specific recommendations for activities or other ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Perhaps this article, "Family Travel Survival Guide: Cancun," will help answer some of your questions: http://away.com/features/family-travel-survival-guide-cancun-1.html. Not sure I'd sweat the travel insurance too much (don't quote me on that if a hurricane strikes!).
